Sahara Sand & Skiing

Slush, Slush Baby!

Imprint
By Jen Tsang, Updated

This week we’ve seen incredible scenes across the Alpes as Storm Celia and high winds from the Saraha have blown sand and dust across our resorts.

Our usually snowy, white mountains are currently orange with a layer of orange powder sitting on top of the snow. There are some amazing videos on social media right now, so check out our Facebook and Instagram to see more!

Apart from that, it is much much quieter this week and you can almost feel the pistes breathing a sigh of relief, with quieter runs, fewer queues at lift stations and an all-around feel of relaxation around the resort. Now all we need is the sun to come out so that we relax on a sunny terrace for a well-earned après ski drink with fiends and family!

Snow Report
We are well and truly into spring skiing now throughout the Alpes. With temperatures firmly above zero and the freezing level at plus 2000m, the snow is fast softening up at all altitudes. And I don’t know about you, but I’d take some slushy snow over ice most days!

Interestingly, I have found that some of the lower-altitude runs and pistes are in better condition than some of the higher, more popular areas. Mainly I think because they are quieter, so the soft, slushier snow isn’t getting cut up by so many skies and boards. I think you might find it interesting to explore the farther reaches of the piste maps this week, you might be pleasantly surprised!

Snow Forecast
The lower villages, towns and off-piste areas are totally clear of snow this week. And with just over a month of the season left, it is hard to believe that we might see any more snowfall before the end of the season. Having said that, we don’t write off any late snow - after all, we’ve seen heavy snowfall in resorts in late April and early May in the past!

Jen's Top Tips

  • The temperature is really warm this week, comfortably above 5C most days, so it is warm! The sun might not be visible in the sky, but it is warm. So layers, a shell jacket over a thicker winter coat, more lightweight gloves are a good idea, and open those vents!
  • If you don’t enjoy the slush, head to the quieter areas of the resort where you’ll find the snow less cut up.
  • Early morning the pistes are harder packed and then slushier later on. So coordinate your ski time to whichever conditions you prefer.

Updates
If you head to the bottom of this page, you can see the day by day forecast of what to expect in your resort. But, we will also be updating this snow report page every Wednesday, so check back in with us next week to see how the pistes are doing and what you can expect from the snow forecast for the next 7 days.
