You've begged, borrowed or rented up until now! It's time to bite the bullet and get your own gear. It's a complex and daunting task, so here's our guide to help you cross the Rubicon.
Since the post-war era skiing has made the transition from exotic leisure pursuit for the select few, to a worldwide participant sport. It's a long time since skis consisted of long wooden planks with 'bear trap' bindings. Today such skis are decorative antiques hanging on the walls of Savoyard restaurants and chalets to add a bit of rustic charm.
In the 1960's came fiberglass, the 1980's were dominated by the infamous 'pencil skis', rear entry boots and one-piece ski suits which brought colour to the slopes. The more fluorescent the better it seemed.
The 1990's saw the introduction of carving skis, and in the current market, the right pair of skis should almost feel like an extension to your boots and should suit your style, ability, weight and skiing aggressiveness. The ‘wrong’ skis can result in your legs becoming wholly uncooperative machines with the potential to cause serious injury.
