On Sunday the 20th of December, the Three Valley resort of Courchevel hosted the FIS Alpine World Cup Ladies Giant Slalom. For the first time in a few year’s team GB was represented by a young lady with a very high chance of making a name for herself amongst the best in the world, Alex Tilley.

Tilley was competing amongst the best girls in the world. With top ladies Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and Anna Fenninger (AUT) injured, the race was on for the top spot. Lara Gut (SUI) was hoping to continue her form from the past few days in Val D’Isere, after two wins in downhill and the combined.

The Austrian, Eva Maria Brem shot through the finish of the first run with the fastest run time, closely followed by Tessa Worley (FRA) and Lara Gut. Second run was full of excitement! Nina Loeseth of Norway, sat in fourth place after first run managed to catch up Lara Gut as they finished in an identical total time putting them both in joint third while they waited for Tessa and Brem to complete their run. Tessa Worley unfortunately failed to complete her run moving the two girls up into second place. With just Brem left to race all eyes were on her as she crossed the finish line, just 0.17 seconds ahead of Lara and Nina, giving her her first WC victory of the season.

But of course the reason why you were in Courchevel was to cheer on your country’s top GS skier, Alex Tilley.

Unfortunately, Alex didn’t make the second run in Courchevel but she still crossed the line in a time showing that she was worthy of being there. The season is only just beginning and Alex will have plenty more chances this year to prove that she is top 30 material… just like she did in the first run of the World Cup in Soelden this year.

I had a quick chat to Alex to find out how she was feeling about her season and what she’s up to next.

What’s it been like stepping up to the World Cup this season?

It’s been really cool being part of the full World Cup GS tour, after a few years of doing the odd one here and there, I finally feel like I belong here rather than just being here to just get the experience. It’s still a big step and so it’s been intense and hard work but it’s exciting.

What’s your favourite thing about Courchevel?

I haven’t had the chance to spend much time in the town itself but the skiing in general has been awesome so I’d probably say that the skiing is the best bit! I also like the race piste, it’s great giant slalom hill.

Where is your favourite place to ski?

My favourite place to ski is probably in Colorado. I really like the lifestyle and the vibe there and the snow is so fun to ski on (even though I don’t tend to be very fast on that snow!)

Where are you headed to next?

After Courchevel I will take a short break at home in Scotland for Christmas, then I go to the next World Cup in Lienz (28th/29th December)

Now you know Alex Tilley the athlete… meet the person!
