Courchevel Apres Ski Report: 1st April 2013

The End of the Mo...

It never fails to astound me how fast the season goes. It seems only yesterday that we were arriving, car laden with skis, bags, a varied selection of Heinz products and a ridiculous passion fruit plant which is yet to produce anything but dead leaves.

And strangely the month of March has seemingly gone on forever. Could it be due to the never ending stream of snowy, wintery days and the absence of sun-filled BBQ parties more commonly associated with this time of year in resort? Or more likely it’s due to the ridiculous facial fluff I’ve had to endure on the face of my loved one all in the name of charity. Here in Courchevel this spring month is better known as Mo March – a month of fundraising and facial hair growth (or futile attempts at).

Throughout Mo March the men in resort lay down their razors and attempt to tease their mos into something loosely considered a style, alongside a diary of events to involve the masses and bring in the cash – and this Mo March was no exception.

The first event, Three-legged Pub Golf, saw pairs of golfers struggle from Moriond through Village and Le Praz before returning to Moriond with sore ankles (from the connecting ankle ties) and more than a little worse for wear following their nine holes downed.

Then there was the Huck Cancer Valley Rally the following week. This ski-based treasure hunt had teams of four, dressed in a ridiculous array of retro clobber and even some space gear (?!?), follow cryptic clues around the slopes of Courchevel. Highlights of the day include Toddy’s bare bum ride through the park and Ewan and Andy mounting tandem skis for the entire course (picture a set of skis with two sets of bindings attached and two idiots clipped in and heading down the mountain at ridiculous speed due to their combined weight and you might be half way to imagining what a comical sight this was).

Finally, last week was the concluding event – Huck Cancer Race Day. Sadly following a day of bright blue skies and sunshine the event was marred by cloud and snow but the spirits of the racers and spectators would not be dampened. Fueled by draught Mutzig and burgers, courtesy of the Bluebird boys, racers took to the gates in the Stade in 1650, battling for the title of fastest skier and boarder.

Emily from Le Ski won the fastest female skier category with Tom from Le Ski winning the fastest boarder prize. The race for fastest male skier was so close and because their efforts couldn’t be separated on the day The Boot Lab’s Ewan and Ski Bluebird’s Sam, were jointly awarded the aforementioned tandem skis for the male ski win.

So after a month of mayhem it was with much delight that we entered April this week and the razor returned. From a purely selfish point of view, no longer does it feel like kissing a walrus, although the stubble rash might return. More importantly though, stacks of cash have been raised and the Huck Cancer flag flies high and proud once more.

After all this action it’s high time I took my foot of the pedal. All we need is some sun now……
