featured in Snow Report Author Caro Blackwell, Destination Editor Updated

Happy New Year! It’s time for fireworks, mulled wine and torchlit descents. One of the busiest weeks of the year has arrived and crowds have descended on the slopes. It's that in between week when you don’t know what day it is, but that’s not really important here in the mountains when every day is a ski day!

A moderate snowfall is expected tonight with more falling during the day tomorrow and into the night, up to around 14 cm of new snow from 1900 metres. The temperatures remain quite mild for this time of year with the freezing level at around 1950 metres Friday night but up at around 3300 metres over the weekend. Next week the temperatures will drop down to a maximum of -7°C on Tuesday and the freezing level goes down to 1400 metres.

Courchevel has around 79cm of soft snow depth at 2700 metres with around 27cm at 1400 metres at La Tania. The avalanche risk levels remain considerable so take care if you really must venture off the pistes especially at altitude, maybe best to stick to the marked pistes with the current weather conditions.

Check below and before you go out for the current lift and runs open, as of today it looks like 79 of the 109 pistes are open.

What's coming up

If you are heading out to celebrate New Year’s Eve - book now! The bars and restaurants only have limited space, the resort is full and some are offering 2 sittings. You will find it difficult to get into places if you haven’t booked in advance.

January is a great time to come and ski. The snow is in good condition, the slopes are quieter, accommodation is normally better value and flights are cheaper. It’s easier to get your favourite table in your preferred mountain restaurant in January. So if you haven’t planned your winter ski holiday yet, check out some of the great chalets and offers in Courchevel
