Tourism in the Courchevel Valley started as early as the beginning of the Twentieth Century with summer holidays rather than winter. The first skiers arrived in Courchevel in the 1930's and the development plan for a ski resort with the help of Lauren Chappis in the 1940's. The official name of 'Courchevel' was decided upon in 1946 along with the creation of the first hotel 'Trois Vallees Hotel'. The first ski lifts were installed towards the end of 1946 by Jean Pomagalski joining Courchevel Village to Courcehvel. By the late 1950's the resort consisted of; one cable car, three gondalas, six ski lifts and 210 buildings for accommodation. Development continued and over fifty years later there is currently 58 ski lifts and 150km of piste along with four separate resorts; Courchevel, Courchevel Moriond, Courchevel Village and Le Praz.
As you increase in altitude towards Courchevel you also seen an increase in facilities with Courchevel Moriond having a better selection of shops, bars, restaurants and amenities than the lower two resorts whilst still retaining the small town charm.
Courchevel Moriond has a nice selection of restaurants with everything from the creative menu at Le Table du Monali to local specialities and pizzas made on an open wood fire at Le Petit Savoyard or a good ol' pancake at Alti Crepes.
